What is Viagra?

Viagra is a brand name for the drug to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug was developed by Pfizer on the base of the active substance Sildenafil. Initially, the company synthesized Sildenafil to develop a drug for cardiovascular diseases.

Sildenafil is able to increase peripheral circulation, especially in the pelvic organs and genitals. Due to this property, the drug has been successfully used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.

Another Pfizer’s brand of Sildenafil is Revatio for pulmonary hypertension.

How did Viagra appear?

In 1992 in Great Britain in a small city of Sandwich, a pharmaceutical giant Pfizer was conducting studies of a new substance Sildenafil Citrate in its clinical laboratory. They were developing this substance for patients with heart diseases.

The company specialists assumed that Sildenafil Citrate would improve the blood flow in the heart and consequently, blood pressure would lower.

However, the results of the studies did not show the expected result. The substance did not have any effect on the function of the heart and did not lower blood pressure.

Men volunteering in the studies were not willing to give the medication back. No one expected the reason why it was so. It turned out that the drug improved their erectile dysfunction. While the blood flow to the heart was the same, circulation in the pelvic organs and the genitals was significantly improved.

Marketing specialists reacted to this unexpected property of Sildenafil Citrate with due attention and were able to recognize in it a powerful means in fight against erectile dysfunction. The studies continued.

When finally, efficacy and safety of Sildenafil for erectile dysfunction was proved, in March 1998 the FDA approved Viagra use for erectile dysfunction.

Viagra dosage and use

Viagra is a prescription drug, strictly follow your doctor recommendations and do not increase or decrease the dose. Do not take Viagra longer than it was prescribed to get even better results.

The recommended starting dose of Viagra for most of the patients is 50 mg.  Take Viagra an hour before the sexual activity.

Of course, it is not always possible to know when exactly you are going to have sex but Viagra has shown to improve erectile dysfunction within 30 minutes and up to 4 hours after you take the drug.

Do not take Viagra more than once a day.

When Viagra is not effective enough, the dose may be increased to 100 mg a day. When the efficacy is good, the dose may be reduced to 25 mg a day to minimize side effects.

Viagra can be taken with or without food.

Remember that Viagra induces erection only in the presence of sexual stimulation. The drug does not replace sexual stimulation but only assists to it.

Generics

A generic drug is a pharmaceutical drug that has the same chemical substance as the drug that was originally developed.

It takes a lot of time and money to develop a new medication. Today only large pharmaceutical companies develop new drugs as they can invest large money into a long-term research and development.

Manufacturing of a new drug, on the contrary, does not require any technological equipment and the costs are not so high.

When a company develops a drug, it obtains a patent that gives the company an exclusive right to manufacture and sell the drug for 12-20 years.

During this period, it is possible to recover all the expenses and if the sales are good, to make a good profit.

When the patent expires, other companies are entitled to manufacture drugs with this active substance.

Each medication has several names. One is a chemical name, the other is an international non-proprietary name (INN) and the third is a brand (trade) name:

  • a chemical name for Viagra is -[2-ethoxy-5-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)sulfonylphenyl]-1-methyl-3-propyl-4H-pyrazolo[4,3-d]pyrimidin-7-one;
  • an international name for Viagra is Sildenafil Citrate:
  • a brand name is Viagra or a generic name.

Viagra generics

Generics can be classified into two broad groups – of good quality and not. There are large companies that specialize in generics manufacturing. These generics are of a very good quality and as effective as the original drugs.

Pfizer’s patent for Viagra (Sildenafil) should have expired in 2010 however, the company did the impossible to extend the patent. No wonder, Viagra’s success was overwhelming.

The patent for Viagra has been extended until 2020. In 2017, the Israeli company Teva obtained the approval of the FDA to sell in the USA Sildenafil under its brand name.

Pfizer and Teva pursued litigations over several years until Teva finally introduced its drug to the US market.

Teva’s generic is available in three doses – 100 mg, 50 mg and 25 mg – as the original drug of Pfizer.

Viagra from India

Majority of substances including Sildenafil for Viagra are manufactured in India.

The Indian companies do not care much about the international patent law, leave alone American laws.

So, generics of the most popular drugs appear in India first.

These generics are prohibited in the USA, the European Union and Canada but there is a huge local market, markets of neighboring countries and finally, there is the Internet. Even in the USA one can easily buy illegal generics online.

The main advantage of Indian generics is their low price which makes them so popular. There are even cheaper analogs but their quality is in question. Some Indian generics have a pretty good quality. Serious Indian pharmaceutical companies manufacture very good generics.

Where can I buy Viagra? Can I buy Viagra without a prescription?

Viagra of Pfizer is available only with a doctor’s prescription. Even online drugstores require a copy of your prescription. Illegal stores and pharmacies sell Viagra generics without any prescription.

As these sites are illegal, from time to time they are closed upon the request by the law enforcement agencies. But some time later they appear again only with a different web address.

As these sites are illegal, from time to time they are closed upon the request by the law enforcement agencies. But some time later they appear again only with a different web address.

Actually, it is not only the price of generics that attracts the customers. Many men are too shy to buy Viagra as they are confused to confess that they have erection problems.

Viagra: interesting facts

Viagra saves lives premature babies’ lives

A premature baby is a baby born before 37 week of pregnancy. According to the US statistics, one in ten babies is born prematurely.

The earlier the baby is born, the higher the risk of health problems and survival.

Premature babies are typically born with immature lungs and may require a mechanical ventilator to breathe. Sildenafil (Viagra) widens blood vessels inside the lungs, lowering pressure and allowing the lungs to function more efficiently. Viagra has been used in small doses to allow doctors to reduce ventilator settings.

Viagra increases athletic performance

There have been a few studies conducted investigating the use of Viagra to enhance athletic performance. The majority of these studies were in cyclists.

For most athletes, Viagra has no effect. One 2006 study did show an improvement in 4 out of 10 cyclists at high altitudes (3.874 meters above sea level). Eleven athletes took part in this studies. One cyclist withdrew because of an intolerable headache. Performance improved by 39% in four sportsmen compared to the control group.

Experts who have reviewed these trials have concluded that there are distinct individual differences in the way people respond to Sildenafil. Interestingly, cardiovascular function during exercise is improved at high altitudes.

Viagra helps to save endangered species

Would you take Rhino horn, tiger bones, seal penises or reindeer antler to improve your sexual life? For centuries, people killed animals and used their parts to aid their sex life with virtually no proof that this really works.

Now when Viagra and its generics appeared, the demand for these parts from exotic and endangered animals appears to have dropped even among the followers of Chinese medicine. People do not need to hunt for extinct animals and kill them for the sake of their bones, horns or genitals for “pharmaceutical”purposes.

Viagra is not a sex stimulant

Viagra does not increase a man’s desire to have sex. Any number of things can contribute to low libido, including low testosterone, depression, stress, relationship problems, prescription medicines, too little or too much exercise, alcohol, and drugs etc.

Viagra only works in the presence of sexual stimulation, it does not increase sexual urge. So it’s crucial to talk to your doctor if you think your sex drive has dropped. Your doctor may suggest therapy if the issue is psychological or a change in medication if that is contributing to your low libido.

Improving your diet and losing weight may also help. In some men, testosterone replacement therapy may be considered.

Viagra is not for women

There have been several studies that have investigated Viagra use in women. No conclusive results have been obtained so far with regards to improving sexual satisfaction or experience and Viagra is not recommended for use in women.
